[[Disaster can happen in a blink...|The Tethered Saviour]]
<</timed>>\<img src="img/UseTether.jpg" alt="Tethered astronaut floating through space." />\
As an astronaut assigned to the COL (Crewed Orbital Laboratory) Bowman, you're currently conducting a spacewalk to repair a failing AE-35 unit.
Swiftly and without warning, the Bowman is struck by space debris. You survive, but the impact sends you spiraling into the vastness. Suddenly, you feel a violent recoil and realize your tether has miraculously remained intact!
You manage to [[pull yourself closer|View From Afar]] to the station to assess the situation...At first glance, the station appears to be in good condition; however, you can see debris from the station floating away, beginning its journey into the long dark of the cosmos.
You notice your helmet visor has a small crack; miraculously, you're not losing oxygen, but your immediate need is to get back inside the Bowman. There is an [[airlock before you|Outer Airlock 1 Hatch]]; if you pull yourself closer to the station, you may be able to enter.
What now?
[[Look around the station...]]
[[Survey for damage...]]
[[Look at the airlock...]]
[[Remove helmet?]]<img src="img/OuterAirlock1Hatch.jpg" alt="An astronaut outside an airlock." />\
Hand over hand, you pull yourself closer and position yourself in front of the airlock.
Oddly, the hatch is closed. Hatches open inwards to the station; when the airlock is sealed and pressurized, the gases inside force the hatch to remain sealed and make it nigh impossible to open. For this reason, exterior airlock hatches are required to remain open during extravehicular activity (EVA) or "spacewalks."
You give the outer airlock hatch a quick inspection and determine that it appears intact.
To the right of the airlock is a [[control pad|Control Pad]]; beneath it there is a [[panel|Panel]] with the word "Manual" painted on it.
[[Return to a view from afar...|View From Afar]]After securing the outer airlock hatch, you turn and see the interior of the airlock. The airlock is comprised of two sections, the smaller crewlock and the larger equipment lock.
In the equipment lock, there are two spare space suits and helmets secured to the wall. Various tools and instruments are to be seen. Directly ahead of you is the [[inner airlock hatch|Inner Airlock 1 Hatch]].
You hear an alarm coming from your suit. The crack in your helmet visor has finally started leaking oxygen. You made it into the airlock just in time, but now you're finding it difficult to breathe.
<i>Stay calm and remember your training</i>, you tell yourself.

You find yourself within corridor module CMA1. Several corridor modules exist throughout the Bowman, connecting various other important modules together.
Directly before you lies the [[Utility Hub]]. There is still no indication of damage at this point.
<<if $inventory.includes('Tether')>>\
You've already gathered the tether here.\

There are several tethers stored near the inner airlock hatch; normally these are stored within the equipment lock of the airlock, but there's little room in there at the moment.

Do you want to return to the [[inner airlock hatch|Inner Airlock 1 Hatch]]?You muse to yourself, the sensation of gliding through the station in microgravity never gets old - even under duress.
Pulling yourself from the corridor module, you find yourself in the Utility Hub. The module serves as an electrical power connection point for the various systems aboard the Bowman, and provides essential life support services such as air and water.
To your immediate right is the [[passageway leading to the Science Bay|Corridor Module A3]], whilst ahead of you lies the [[corridor module leading to the Commons area|Corridor Module B1]]. On your left is the [[passageway to the Observation Deck|Corridor Module A2]].

<img src="img/Passageway.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />
Corridor Module A2 is rather uneventful as connection modules go. The walls are mostly covered with panels and the occasional small window; you of course know that underneath those panels is wiring, cabling, and various sensitive equipment that must be protected.
[[You continue to the Observation Deck...|Observation Deck]]
[[You return to the Utility Hub...|Utility Hub]]<img src="img/Passageway2.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />
You pull yourself through Corridore Module A3, leading to the onboard research facilities of the Science Bay.
There are some tablets attached to the wall via flexible mounts, often used with various research being conducted. Various sensitive equipment and scientific tools line the corridor in storage containers.
[[You continue to the Science Bay...|Science Bay]]
[[You return to the Utility Hub...|Utility Hub]]<img src="img/Corridor.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />
Corridor Module B1 connects the [[Utility Hub]] to the [[Commons]] area onboard the Bowman. Normally you would hear some chatter or noise coming from the Commons area, but you're instead greeted only with the hum of machinery.<img src="img/ObservationDeck.jpg" alt="A technical room in a space station." />\
The Observation Deck is - wait for it - an observatory module, for viewing both the planet below and monitoring various exterior systems on the Bowman; this could be anything from life sustaining mechanisms for water and air, to monitoring probes providing atmospheric data from the planet.
In order to aid views of the planet and the exterior, the Observation Deck also contains the station's [[largest viewport window|Observation Viewport]].
[[Return to the corridor module...|Corridor Module A2]]<img src="img/ObservationWindow.jpg" alt="An image of a planet viewed from space." />
You pull yourself into the massive observation viewport. The viewport itself protrudes from the station in the manner of a half-spherical shape. From this great window, the planet below is visible in great detail.
You gaze outside and lay eyes upon bluish-purple hues of the planet, surrounded by a haze of gases and dust. It is the planet Vayu, named for the Persian god of wind and atmosphere; indeed, just like the mythological god could have both an angelic and demonic nature, the planet too has a dual nature with an expanse of life-supporting area and a choking hellish wasteland formed from volcanic eruption.
<i>Whichever way the wind blows</i>, you contemplate.
The grim landscape always reminds you of the album covers from the ancient Death Metal bands that one of your peers back on Earth liked. Still, there are some bodies of water and the atmosphere is nearing breathable levels thanks to terra-forming efforts.
[[Look around the Observation Deck...|Observation Deck]] <img src="img/ScienceBay.jpg" alt="A space station laboratory." />\
Exiting the passageway, you find yourself within the Science Bay. This section of the station is a laboratory module that functions as a clean environment for research and experiments.
You look around the science bay. Various forms of research are underway, such as protein structures, cellular cultures, data on the planet below, microgravity experiments, and so on. There is also a database with a SAN (Storage Area Network) which contains backups of the various research data.
There is a [[blinking red light|Blinking Red Light]] on one of the consoles. A [[storage locker|Storage Locker]] is attached to the left side of the Science Bay's wall.
[[Return to the corridor module...|Corridor Module A3]] You enter the Commons area. Normally, the familiar sound of your crewmates could be heard here. The Commons area is where astronauts eat or relax when they're not working; however, no one is here. After a moment, the realization of your isolation hits you...<i>where is everyone</i>, you ask yourself.
Due to the nature of it's purpose, the Commons is a larger module than the rest of the Bowman. Two passageways are on the left side of the Commons, [[one leading to the Bunks|Corridor Module B2]] while [[another leads to the Power Racks|Corridor Module B4]]. On your right exist two additional passageways, [[one for the Datacenter|Corridor Module B3]] and [[the other heading to Airlock 2|Corridor Module B5]]. The [[hatchway before you|Corridor Module C1]] heads to Command.
At once, you hear a message broadcast on the speakers:
"Warning! Station descending! Orbital decay rate increasing! Ignite thrusters to stabilize orbit now!"
[[Look around the Commons...|Look Commons]]
[[Return to Corridor Module B1...|Corridor Module B1]]<img src="img/Passageway.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />
You head toward the Bunks; you're quite tired from the physical exertion of the EVA. Although space is nearly a perfect vaccum, the pressure of your spacesuit requires considerable effort to move the arms and legs around.
You'd love to be able to secure yourself in a sleep station and rest, but you tell yourself to keep moving.

[[Return to the Commons...|Commons]] <img src="img/Passageway2.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />
As you enter Corridore Module B3, you consider the various research that's been conducted on the Bowman. Much of the research that's been conducted in the Science Bay relates to adapting human physiology to new planetary environments. Life on Earth is not what it once was; at the very least, you must safeguard the data for the future generations to come.

You enter Corridor Module B5 and make way for the airlock, thinking to yourself about all of the fictional portrayals of airlocks in the sci-fi films of old.
Unfortunately, there's simply no quick process to the ingress or egress of space. Everything involves pressurizing or depressurizing, breathing gas from tanks, checking for leaks, and so on. And just like scuba diving in the ocean, it's absolutely essential to follow protocol in order to avoid decompression sickness.
Right now, you really wish there was such a thing as transporters.
[[Continue on to the inner airlock hatch...|Inner Airlock 2 Hatch]]
[[Return to the Commons...|Commons]] You enter the bunks, which is essentially a few sleep stations containing sleeping bags, workstations, and various personal items brought by each astronaut.
[[Look around the bunks...|Look Bunks]]
[[Return to the corridor module...|Corridor Module B2]] You enter the Datacenter. There's not a lot of room to move around in here. A "datacenter" sounds like an impressive term, but on a station the size of the Bowman, it's essentially a glorified closet full of rackmounted equipment with "das blinkenlights."
[[Take a closer look at the datacenter...|Look Datacenter]]
[[Return to the corridor module...|Corridor Module B3]] As you enter the room, you see the power racks hanging on the wall before you. Power from the solar array wings is stored in batteries here, and power systems here also route electrical service to the Utility Hub and throughout the station.
In addition to the power systems, this module also houses thermal radiators and a cooling system to maintain appropriate operating temperature.
<<if $powerRestored is true>>\
You look at the repaired wire; it would be ideal to use some electrical tape as an additional safeguard, but it's the best you can do with what you have available. \
<<else>>\
Everything looks relatively intact here, but you notice one hot wire (containing electrical current) has become loose and made contact with a grounded structure; it looks like a short circuit occurred and burned this wire...this likely caused power loss somewhere on the station.

[[You enter the airlock...|Airlock 2]]
<<else>>\
You enter the airlock chamber and secure the inner hatch behind you. As with the previous airlock you encountered, there is a panel on the wall to operate the airlock system.
[[You enter the airlock...|Airlock 2]]
[[Return to the corridor module...|Corridor Module B5]]
<</if>>Airlock 2 looks like the others on the Bowman. There are various instruments and tools attached to the wall; additionally, just like in the airlock you entered the station with, there is a plaque with instructions for operation.
Directly ahead of you is the [[outer airlock hatch|Outer Airlock 2 Hatch]].
You realize your time on the Bowman is limited, and whether or not you even have the time for EVA preparation has crossed your mind. Unfortunately, spacewalks require following several checklists, chief among them being the denitrogenation process, suit preparation, and of course depressurizing the airlock.
Glancing over at the plaque on the wall, you sigh to yourself. While repressurizing an airlock can be done quicker due to emergencies, there's virtually no leeway to the depressurization process.

<<else>>
You pull and pull and pull, but there's absolutely no way for you to open the outer airlock hatch. The pressure within the airlock acts as it's own locking mechanism, forcing the hatch to seal and remain closed. If you want to open the hatch, you'll need to depressurize the airlock first.
[[Look around the airlock...|Airlock 2]]
<</if>>You open the outer airlock hatch and pull it inward, leaving the hatchway open.
As you're now outside the station, the outer airlock is directly before you. On the exterior of the Bowman are rails which you can secure tethers to, and what appears to be [[safety grips|Above Airlock 2]] leading above the airlock.
[[Return to the airlock...|Airlock 2]]<img src="img/AboveAirlock2.jpg" alt="An astronaut using handrails." />\
Using the safety grips found on the hull of the station, you pull yourself to the right of the airlock.
When you finally have visibility of the Command module, what you find brings forth a gasp. The Command module has an enormous breach, leaving it exposed to the hard vaccuum of space.
The totality of the breach must have been immediate upon impact; there is no discernable way that Commanding officer Rico or others could have survived.
You push any grief aside and focus on the task at hand. You'll need to [[find a way|Find a Way to Command]] to make it over to the breach in the Command module. Hmm...
[[Return to the exterior of the airlock...|Outside Airlock 2]] <img src="img/Corridor.jpg" alt="A futuristic corridor in space." />

You try to enter the Command module, but the hatchway remains shut. It looks like the hatch still has power, but as you press the "Open" button a warning is announced.
"Warning! Command module hull is compromised!"

With some effort, you manage to remove the hatch. Gently pushing larger debris from your path, you move into Corridor Module D1; this module connects [[Command]] to the [[third remaining airlock|Inner Airlock 3 Hatch]] and the docked Crew Recovery Vehicle (CRV).
Although the other corridors within the Bowman look fine, you notice some un-powered systems upon the wall in D1. The damage from the command module is evident within the corridor.

Since the Bowman was pressurized normally to 1 atm before the impact occured, the inner airlock hatchway was open and unsecured...\

...this also means that the modules connected to Command, including the airlock and the docked CRV have been totally depressurized.
You consider the situation and determine...<i>With the hatchway damaged, I won't be able to repressurize this airlock. BUT if the CRV is undamaged, I should be able to repressurize the cockpit.</i>

Airlock 3 is somewhat different from the others you've visited. To begin, the outer airlock hatch is on the floor of the airlock, as you enter the CRV from the hatch on it's top. In addition, this airlock also has a few windows on it's sides, for observing the approach and departure of vehicles.
Since this entire part of the station lost pressure due to the damaged hatchway between Command and the corridor module, you'll need to repressurize the CRV.
[[Continue to the outer airlock hatch...|Outer Airlock 3 Hatch]]
[[Return to the inner airlock hatch...|Inner Airlock 3 Hatch]]
Since the CRV is currently docked, it means the outer airlock hatch is open and stowed away; this is done because if the airlock was pressurized with the hatch closed, you wouldn't be able to open it due to the pressure.
The airlock is not pressurized at the moment due to the breach, so you will need to carefully squeeze through the CRV hatchway in your spacesuit.
[[Enter the CRV...|CRV]]
[[Return to the airlock...|Airlock 3]] You climb into the crew craft. The station cries out in desperation once more.
"Warning! Orbital decay at maximum stability level! Station descending! Evacuate station!"
The Crew Recovery Vehicle - or CRV for short - is a far cry from the the crew modules of old. Certain mechanical switches still exist for failsafe purposes, but almost all of the interfaces are touchscreens. The CRV is affectionately referred to as "Shipley" by you and your crewmates.
Although it's currently powered down, various running lights illuminate the interior with a soft glow. You find it incredibly difficult to move around with your full EVA suit on.
If you don't want to burn to a crisp during the Bowman's re-entry, you need to move quickly.

You push a few select switches to power on the CRV. The touch panels, gauges, and various display screens power on and bathe the CRV's cabin in what amounts to no less than a colorful light show.

<img src="img/Undock.jpg" alt="Image of a space station from above." />\
You select the release for docking clamps, and begin the engine burn sequence to undock from the station.
The thrusters ignite and your craft moves to a safe distance from the station. You gaze solemnly towards Crewed Orbital Laboratory Bowman, surveying the extent of the damage. As the Bowman begins to descend and disintegrate, you pause to take it all in and say a farewell to Commander Rico and your fellow crewmates.
[[Return to the screen...|Screen]]
<<set $undocked to true>>\

Well...
You've made it this far and select the docking clamps for release, and began to thrust away from the station.
Unfortunately, the mangled remains of Solar Array Wing 2 (SAW2) are ever so slighly in the path of the CRV. Before you have a moment to stop and prevent the collision, the CRV collides with the SAW2; the craft is damaged and depressurizes rapidly.
At least your death is swift...
[[Start Over|Orbital Decay]]
<<set $undocked to true>>\
<</if>>After undocking from the Bowman and moving a safe distance away, you ignite your thrusters to begin deorbital burn. The thrusters fire for the calculated alotment of time; this extended burn greatly slows down your craft velocity and adjusts altitude for your desired re-entry corridor.
Your computer responds:
"Deorbital burn completed. Please [[continue re-entry sequence|Screen]]."
<<set $burnComplete to true>>\You adjust the angle to the specific degree for the re-entry corridor; this will ensure a safe trajectory. If you didn't adjust the angle enough, you might bounce of the atmosphere and into the cold dark of space; alternatively, if you adjusted it too much, your craft would be consumed by the heat of re-entry and you would drop too quickly. Setting the correct angle allows for a gliding smooth descent. Good job!

As the crew craft makes it's deorbital burn and descends towards Sigma Beach, you glance out the viewport. The horror of what you see dawns on you; only now do you recognize the name from the calendar in Rico's sleep station. Not a great idea to come here! The waters and beach are totally infested with large egg-sacs of arachnid-like insects. The bugs swarm your craft, tearing it open and ripping your limbs apart in hope of snatching a bite. You survived the orbital decay of the station, only to become a meal!
Thanks for playing!
[[Start Over|Orbital Decay]]<img src="img/LakeOspia.jpg" alt="A picture of a lake and lakefront contaminated by radioactive fallout." />
You begin your descent towards Lake Ospia. You remember long ago that there was a large space battleship that had been damaged and landed here, only to be destroyed by a suicidal alien giant that crashed his own ship into it. As a result, the entire lake and lakefront was blanketed in radioactive fallout. Not the best choice to come here! As the crew craft lands, the intense fallout kills you in a most unpleasant manner; at least it's quick! You survived the orbital decay of the station, only to become radiated goo!
Thanks for playing!
[[Start Over|Orbital Decay]]<img src="img/Skura.jpg" alt="A photo of a hostile cybernetic being in front of battle torn ruins." />
You begin your descent towards Skura. The uneasy truce between the Tholls and the Skuran peoples have taken a disastrous turn, resulting in fierce skirmishes and all out war. You've heard new rumors of mechanized beings on the battlefront lately. The crew craft lands, and as you crawl out of the ship you realize the rumors were true. The last thing you see and hear is something resembling a metallic android walking towards you and yelling "Exterminate!" You see flashes and collapse as your become the latest statistic of Skura's new rulers.
Thanks for playing!
[[Start Over|Orbital Decay]]<img src="img/SkauGros.jpg" alt="A photo of a gentle pastel colored pristine lake with circular rock formations." />\
Of course! You select the incredible Sea of Skau Gros to splashdown in; it is sometimes called the "cylindrical sea" due to the circular swirled rock formations that lay within it's tame pastel waters.
You begin your deorbital burn to position yourself for splashdown. As you adjust the angle for re-entry, you decelerate and see flames around the viewport; luckily your heatshield protects you from the intense temperature. Your parachute opens and you gently splashdown into the seas. As you open the hatch and climb out of the craft, you take a deep breath of fresh air and open your eyes.
The Bowman disintegrated and burned up in re-entry, but you made it home safely. You survived. Congratulations!

[[Look around the Science Bay...|Science Bay]]Your station, the COL Bowman, is immediately before you.
All around you is the starry black of space - beautiful, tranquil, and utterly merciless; it can be quite breathtaking, both literally and figuratively speaking.
You've always enjoyed your spacewalks, but your immediate concern is to get back inside the Bowman and assess the situation.
[[Continue looking around...|View From Afar]] From your current angle, the Bowman looks intact. The debris must be from damage that you can't see. Several fragments are visible, but it's difficult to determine what they are from this viewpoint.
[[Continue looking around...|View From Afar]] The airlock is directly ahead of you. It is one of three airlocks on the Bowman, and is currently closed.
That the hatch is closed strikes you as odd. By protocol, hatches remain open during extravehicular activity (EVA); this is because they open inward to the station and would be impossible for astronauts to open if the airlock were to be repressurized.
You hope that isn't the case and...
[[...pull yourself closer to the station|Outer Airlock 1 Hatch]].
[[...continue looking around|View From Afar]]. Bad idea! You remove your helmet. You still had air in your lungs, and the decompression causes your lungs to rupture. In addition, the liquid water in your bloodstream turns to vapor, causing an embolism. You are conscious for about 15 seconds before you succumb to a rather unpleasant death. Thanks for playing!
[[Start Over|Orbital Decay]] The Bowman's airlocks use electronic control pads to open and close the hatches. You sincerely hope that with the hatch currently closed, the airlock hasn't been pressurized somehow.
You peer from your helmet's visor to the control pad; it has switches for [[opening|Open Button]], [[closing|Close Button]], and a safety. Addtionally, there is an LED to indicate the control pad is receiving power; unfortunately, it is off.
[[Look at the outer airlock hatch again...|Outer Airlock 1 Hatch]]You look at the panel beneath the control pad; the word "Manual" is painted on it in large yellow and black block letters and it looks like it has a pull-handle with which to [[remove|Remove Panel]] it.
[[Look at the outer airlock hatch again...|Outer Airlock 1 Hatch]]You look at the few photographs you've brought of your family.
An older one with your parents catches your are; they're no longer alive, but you like to "carry them with you" always. Then there's the one from your family trip to the rings of Saturn; it was one of your most memorable vacations. And of course the smiling face of your daughter back home; you swallow hard and focus.
<i>I <b>must</b> get home safely</i>, you tell yourself.
[[Look around the bunks...|Look Bunks]]You pick up your music player and read it's crystalline display; your favorite nerdy pop punk band Hyperspace's "Emulator" album is currently playing. You make a mental note to check out their new release if you ever make it out of here.
[[Look around the bunks...|Look Bunks]]You pick up your guitar and lightly strum some chords. <i>Hmm. Still in tune</i>, you tell yourself. The guitar isn't one of the expensive fancy name brands; rather, it's a cheaper model and rather beat up...BUT it's always served you well.
Even so, you have more pressing things to consider at this point.
[[Look around the bunks...|Look Bunks]]You peer closer at Rico's calendar; on it is written "Sigma Beach!!" with the date circled. Hmm...that name sounds vaguely familiar to you.

You notice that the blinking red light is an alarm indicator. The SAN routinely sends backup copies of the research data to the planet below, but it appears connectivity has been severed between the sites.
You had been working on the AE-35 unit when disaster struck; that device is a component of station communication. Perhaps something happened to the servers within the station's datacenter?

<<if $exerciseComplete is false>>\
You opt for the Exercise (CEVIS) pre-breathing protocol. In order to do this, you'll need to breathe O2 via a pre-breathing mask and perform exercise on a stationary bike. Once you've done so, you'll continue to pre-breathe, depressurize the airlock to 10.2 psi, and continue breathing in your suit for a while.
At this point, you'll need to start pre-breathing and exercising.
<<elseif $exerciseComplete is true and

You opt for the In Suit Light Exercise (ISLE) pre-breathing protocol. In order to do this, you'll need to breathe O2 via a pre-breathing mask for an hour. Afterwards, you'll don your suit and perform light exercises while continuing to pre-breathe.
After placing the pre-breathing mask over your face and opening the valve of the O2 cannister, you begin breathing and continue to do so until 1 hour has passed.
Now you'll need to begin suit preparation and continue to breathe while performing your exercises.

[[Return to CRV...|CRV]]Well, that was a bad idea...
The airlock hatches remain closed, but because you've started the depressurization process, the gases have been vented from the airlock leaving you no oxygen to breathe...you rapidly lose consciousness and succumb to the effects of hypoxia. Thanks for playing!

[[Title Screen|Orbital Decay]]"Orbital Decay" is my first experience with Twine, made and released for the <a href="https://www.springthing.net/2022/index.html">Spring Thing 2022</a>.
The setting, while similar in ways to certain films, is an idea I've had for quite some time; however, unlike the vast majority of sci-fi films, I wanted to present at least some realistic elements. I've spent a good deal of time gathering details about this and that, and learned a few things in the process as well. In the end, although certain information stems from existing NASA documentation and processes, adding every single hard scientific fact would have been akin to a ridiculously long manual or outline.
My original intention was to make "Orbital Decay" a graphical text adventure for the vintage Commodore 64, with a nod towards the incredible games of my youth from Sierra On-Line. I'd never heard of Twine or the other interactive fiction platforms until coming across the Spring Thing website, but stumbled upon Twine and thought it interesting...why not try it?
A lot of time has passed since I've worked on any games (or even any HTML/CSS for that matter!), but I was pleased with what I've seen from Twine. I would have liked to flesh out the story some more, provide original artwork, and record better audio tracks though. Perhaps one day I'll eventually make a C64 port and accompanying 8-bit soundtrack, but I already have some ideas to see where else I can go with the Twine platform.
Until then, I hope you find some enjoyment in this version.
